Fair
isle, that from the fairest of all the flowers
thy gentlest of all names does take!
How many memories of what radiant hours
At sight of thee and thine at one awake!
O hyacinth isle! O
purple zante!
Osola d'oro! Fioro di Levante!
Edgar Allen Poe,
Ode to Zante
Zakynthos is the
most southerly of the Ionian islands and its
beautiful scenery and excellent beaches make it an
ideal holiday destination.
Much of the island
is covered by pine forested hillsides and
mountians, traditional villages and truly
spectacular coastal scenery, the south enjoys
gentle hills, lush plains and long sandy beaches.
zakynthos is
renowned as the greenest of the Greek islands and
the air is filled with the scent of blossom in the
early spring, even in its most arid parts.
During Venetian
rule the island was referred to as Fiore de
Levante, Flower of the east, and is sometimes
known as Zante. |
